I am missing the point

The parents of a three-year-old girl feared abducted on a family holiday in Portugal have spoken of their "anguish and despair" at her disappearance.

Mr and Mrs McCann, both 38-year-old doctors, had been dining in a tapas restaurant a few hundred yards from the apartment on Thursday evening.

They had been checking on Madeleine and her younger brother and sister, two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, every half an hour.

I adopted my daughter and when ever you mention the fact to people that you had to have police checks, social worker visits etc etc, their response is something along the lines of "well they have to be sure you are going to look after the child" I would not leave my daughter in a hotel room without an adult. The police check and the social service visits don't make me a good parent, its common sense, which in these case the parents were clearly lacking. Would the media be so kind if the parents were not middle class doctors but an unmarried single mother with her boyfriend, somehow I don't think so.

I really do hope that the little girl is found safe and well and returns home to her parents who are no doubt going out of their minds with worry.
